Aids to the Abhidhamma Philosophy

By Dr. C. B. Dharmasena – M.B.B.S. (London)

No enthusiastic follower of the Buddha, nor earnest seeker after the truth, and no student of psychology or philosophy, be he a follower of the Buddha or not, can afford to do without a knowledge of the Abhidhamma philosophy, which has been handed down to us by one who not only attained perfection himself but pointed out to us the path by which we ourselves may obtain permanent release from all suffering. The Buddha has passed on to us not only the knowledge of his philosophy, but also the practical manner by which each one of us may convert that knowledge into understanding, through meditative development along the lines of the “One and only way, the Way of the Fourfold Setting up of Mindfulness”;1 therefore the oftrepeated criticism that Buddhism is only a philosophy and not a religion, is without any foundation whatsoever.

Use of modern scientific knowledge to understand what happened during meditation, Pancha Abhinnas and some of the concepts described in Buddhism gave an tremendous impact to the acceptance of Buddhism as a world religion having practical applicability than any other religion.  Development of several scientific methods and instruments such as computer generated methods on testing esp ability of individual persons, electroencephalographs (EEG) to record brain wave patterns, artificial stimuli given to certain sections of the brain that will regenerate some of above conditions and the Frequency Following Response (FFR) technique developed after studying the brain wave patterns under meditation to regenerate similar state of trance had lead to study the Buddhist meditation techniques and concepts like Pancha Abhinna by the scientists  giving much  recognition to the Buddhism and its application in daily life.

Digging mine in Afghanistan unearths 2,600-year-old Buddhist monastery – By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 10:47 AM on 15th November 2010.

A Chinese company digging an unexploited copper mine in Afghanistan has unearthed ancient statues of Buddha in a sprawling 2,600-year-old Buddhist monastery.

Archaeologists are rushing to salvage what they can from a major 7th century B.C. religious site along the famed Silk Road connecting Asia and the Middle East.

The ruins, including the monastery and domed shrines known as ‘stupas,’ will likely be largely destroyed once work at the mine begins.

The ruins were discovered as labourers excavated the site on behalf of the Chinese government-backed China Metallurgical Group Corp, which wants to develop the world’s second largest copper mine, lying beneath the ruins

Hanging over the situation is the memory of the Buddhas of Bamiyan — statues towering up to 180 feet high in central Afghanistan that were dynamited to the ground in 2001 by the country’s then-rulers, the Taliban, who considered them symbols of paganism.

No one wants to be blamed for similarly razing history at Mes Aynak, in the eastern province of Logar. MCC wanted to start building the mine by the end of 2011 but under an informal understanding with the Kabul government, it has given archaeologists three years for a salvage excavation.

Archaeologists working on the site since May say that won’t be enough time for full preservation.
