Anagarika Dharmapala is a Great National Hero

distinguished stars of the galaxy of heroes

“Of the many heroes who are remembered in numerous ways and who will live in our hearts and minds of a grateful nation, Anagarika Dharmapala shines as the brightest star among many other distinguished stars of the galaxy of heroes”.

Why?

Awake ! Oh Sinhalese !”, was his cry from town to town, village to village. He shook Ceylon with his oratorical wrath and the use of the media to reach the masses, setting up his own press and writing copious articles to newspaper and Buddhist journals, in Sinhala and English, here and in England. He was the writer, printer, publisher. It worked. The Sinhalese got up again.

Do you believe in rebirth? – – Ven Dr K Dhammananda Thero

compress_CaptureMany Buddhists tend to accept rebirth as a part of their religious faith. They rely on traditional belief and religious scriptures to reinforce their acceptance of rebirth. However, few make the effort to investigate what rebirth is and how it takes place. Among those who refute the doctrine of rebirth, there are very few who take the trouble to study and to investigate rebirth as a subject. Those who want to know what rebirth is and how it takes place, must study and investigate this subject just as they would study any other subject (chemistry, physics, etc.); after study, they will be able to understand to a certain extent.

Many people are reluctant to accept rebirth because they cannot understand it or because they do not remember their previous birth. Just because they cannot understand or remember their previous life is not a reasonable argument. Remember that rebirth is a process that is not perceptible to the senses. Rebirth cannot be discovered by exact measurement and mathematical calculation or by the application of machines and scientific instruments.

Ani Sutta – 20. Opamma-samyutta, Samyutta Nikaya

compress_Monks_not_Listen6Staying at Savatthi. “Monks, there once was a time when the Dasarahas had a large drum called ‘Summoner.’ Whenever Summoner was split, the Dasarahas inserted another peg in it, until the time came when Summoner’s original wooden body had disappeared and only a conglomeration of pegs remained. [1]

“In the same way, in the course of the future there will be monks who won’t listen when discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — are being recited. They won’t lend ear, won’t set their hearts on knowing them, won’t regard these teachings as worth grasping or mastering. But they will listen when discourses that are literary works — the works of poets, elegant in sound, elegant in rhetoric, the work of outsiders, words of disciples — are recited. They will lend ear and set their hearts on knowing them. They will regard these teachings as worth grasping & mastering.

“In this way the disappearance of the discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — will come about.

“Thus you should train yourselves: ‘We will listen when discourses that are words of the Tathagata — deep, deep in their meaning, transcendent, connected with emptiness — are being recited. We will lend ear, will set our hearts on knowing them, will regard these teachings as worth grasping & mastering.’ That’s how you should train yourselves.”

Pàyàsi Sutta – Digha Nikàya (Volume 2)

compress_Is_there_life_after_death_Reverend Kumara, I maintain that kamma does not have effects. I believe that there is no life after death, no world beyond our own. I think that angels and demons are things from a child’s dream.”

“Your point of view is unique, for I’ve never encountered one who bandied about so. Hmm. I think I should put some questions about this to you. What do you think, Prince? Does the Sun and Moon exist in this world, or apart from it? Are they humans? Or are they some celestial non-human beings?”

“Ahh. Prince, imagine a man who was born without sight. He had never experienced Light and Dark, Blue and Red, Moon and Sun. This man might very well say, “Light and Dark are an unreal thing, they cannot exist, they are the things of a child’s dream.” Or “Color? The very idea is completely beyond the realm of possibility! I am not aware of these things, therefore, they cannot exist.” Would he be correct, Prince?”

“What? No. There is light and darkness in the very room we’re in now. Color exists all around us. Such a man would be incorrect.”

You, Prince, are like that Blind man. The other worlds cannot be seen as you believe, through the physical eye.

It is those Holy men, the ascetics who go into retreat and develop themselves spiritually who gain access to the Purified Eye. This purified eye is stronger than the physical eye……..

How to Overcome your Difficulties – Ven Dr K Sri Dhammananda Thero

compress_how_toAre you worried? Are you miserable? If so, you are invited to read this booklet. The theme of this booklet is dedicated to you and to those who worry themselves unduly – even unto death!

Worries and miseries are twin evils that go hand in hand. They co-exist in this world. If you feel worried, you are miserable! If you are miserable, you are worried. We must face facts. Although we cannot run away from them, we must not let these twin evils of worry and misery overcome us. We must overcome them. We can do so by our own human efforts, correctly directed with determination and patience. With proper understanding and carefully applied intelligence, we should be able to subdue our emotional feelings and do away with worries and miseries.

“Your property will remain when you die. Your friends and relatives will follow you up to your grave. But only good or bad actions you have done during your life-time will follow you beyond the grave.”

Your wealth can decorate only your house but not you. Only your own virtue can decorate you. Your dress can decorate your body but not you. Only your good conduct can decorate you.

Control your mind
Man’s mind influences his body profoundly. If allowed to function the viciously and entertain unwholesome thoughts, mind can cause disaster, can even kill a being; but it can also cure a sick body.

Buddha says: “No enemy can harm one so much as one’s own thoughts of craving, thoughts of hate, thoughts of jealousy and so on.”
